I am American and was born in and grew up in the United States. I attended Beloit College, in Wisconsin (USA), and studied International Relations and languages (English and German).
After completing my Bachelors degree, I earned a law certificate, and then worked for three years in Chicago as a paralegal for a large international law firm that did business with European companies, in which time I also had the opportunity to work in London for 6 weeks.
After taking German in college and being in Germany in 1986, I was fascinated by Germany and the German language, and I wanted to live in Europe again and expand my knowledge of Germany and the German language. I enrolled and was accepted at the University of Mainz, in Germersheim, Germany. I studied German and Applied Linguistics, as well as Italian and Economics, from 1992 to 1996. In 1996, I received my degree in translation (AGÜ, or Akademisch-geprüfter Übersetzer). During my years of study in Germany, I also taught English, Legal Terminology, and Conference Interpreting at the University of Mainz.
In 1996, I moved from Germersheim to Heidelberg, Germany and began working full-time as an in-house translator at SAP AG, in Walldorf, Germany. I had the opportunity to work at SAP during the boom years of the software industry in the 1990s, where I localized software for the U.S. and international markets. I also translated software and marketing and business texts from German into English. In addition, I worked as a technical writer for SAP. In 2000, I returned to the U.S. with SAP and worked in the Irving, Texas office of SAP, until summer 2007.
Since 2007, I have been a freelance translator. I work for clients in Germany and the U.S., and have translated documents from a wide variety of fields. I love the art of translation, and the business side of translating too. I greatly enjoy helping people get their message from German into English, and assisting in German-American communication and intercultural exchange and intercultural understanding. I also teach German at the university level here in the United States.
